Christmas Origins

Every December, Christians all over the world look forward to the coming of Christmas. It is the most widely celebrated holiday of the year.
It started nearly two thousand years ago, with the birth of Jesus Christ. In the Bible, Saint Luke tells of an angel who appeared to Virgin Mary. The angel told that she would be the mother of the Saviour whom God had promised His people. Mary and her husband Joseph went to Bethlehem shortly before she was due to give birth. Because there was no room for them in the inn, they found shelter in a stable. It was there that Mary had the baby. She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger. Then, as the angel had instructed, she named her son Jesus.

In nearby fields, shepherds were watching their flocks when angels appeared, telling them of the newborn child. The shepherds were Jesus’s first visitors. Later, three wise men (known as Magi) came from the East with gifts. They found the spot where Jesus lay by following a brightly shining star.
